SNAPS Lanarkshire
has evolved over the past 12-18 months when a group of like-minded and determined parents resolved to address the lack of meaningful facilities and quality services for their children and young people who have additional support needs.
Current provision often fell short of meeting their children’s needs and aspirations and, rather than complain and do nothing, the parents got together and decided that, if what their kids wanted and needed wasn’t available, then they would take control and do it themselves and create something brilliant.
Driven by a simple and unifying belief that their kids deserve equality; to be treated with dignity; to feel valued; and to be included in their local community, SNAPS Lanarkshire was born in December 2019.

Our centre of excellence will be recognised for its vibrancy, its welcoming atmosphere and its inclusive approach.
Providing dedicated spaces for art and music, sensory experiences, clubs and recreation (both indoors and outdoors), our centre will be a joyful and safe place that will be acclaimed for its person-centred approach and its commitment to lifelong learning and development.
It will be designed as a flexible, multi-functional space that can be adapted for a variety of uses by different groups.
It will generate income by letting out rooms and space to the local community, including local businesses, and it will have a community café as its beating heart.
Our family centre will be more than bricks and mortar; it will attract quality staff and it will be supported by an army of highly motivated volunteers. · In the future, our centre will grow and extend the services and facilities on offer.· We will know when our mission is achieved when our children and young people say:
‘This is our place and it’s amazing. Come on in!’

I particularly campaign for those who are more vulnerable either at work or in the community. I have been involved in many voluntary groups such as parent councils, charity branches and community committees. I am passionate about the community we live in and it being inclusive of everyone. SNAPS will be a great achievement and I am excited that I am involved from the beginning.

My name is Laura Paterson. I live in Stepps, a mining village in North Lanarkshire with my husband John and I am Mum to Daniel and Step Mum to Emma and Lewis. I have worked for Glasgow City Council for 29 years doing mainly admin roles but at the moment I am PA to the Director of one of Glasgow’s largest departments. I was recently inspired to join the MCR Pathways group which supports disadvantaged young people. I am thoroughly enjoying mentoring a young person in Glasgow and meet up with her weekly. My hope is to support her through some difficult times and just be there for her. Hopefully she gets as much from it as I do! My son Daniel has additional needs and I always felt there is lack of activities and places for him to visit and enjoy with his friends in the area. Until recently I was the Secretary of the RASCALS R US Parents Group. This group was set up to create facilities and wonderful opportunities for children and young people with additional needs in North Lanarkshire. I continue to be part of this community of fabulous parents to ensure our children who live in the North Lanarkshire area have access to a fun, inclusive safe place to build relationships and enjoy activities in the community……just like any another kid!!!

I’m a stay at home mum and carer for Lewis. Before I gave up work seven years ago, I worked at Optical Express in the payroll department for fifteen years. Until recently I was the treasurer for Enables Rascals Branch. I enjoy socialising and eating out, in particular trying new restaurants. I’m also a member of a local book club as I enjoy reading a lot and this has introduced me to lots of new authors that I wouldn’t have considered before. Summary - I’m a mum, housewife, doggy mum who likes a wee drink and good feed most weekends, I fit in a wee book here and there and I’m basically winging it every single day! :)
